The Directorate
Richard Ingwe, an international leadership award-winning sustainable development specialist is the Executive Director of CRADLE. His contributions were recently recognized by an appointment to serve on the International Steering Committee of the Energy Efficiency Global Forum and Exhibition (EE Global) charged with organizing the forthcoming event in November 2007 in Washington, D.C., USA. He manages CRADLE’s mission, strategy, proposals, networks and programmes with the assistance of staff. His special responsibilities include strategic planning of CRADLE's programmes. In 2004, he represented CRADLE at the World Renewable Energy Forum, the Renewables 2004 international conference, and ENGO's strategy fora in Bonn, in Germany. As a Consultant for Canadian Environmental organizations led by One Sky, he undertook a technical baseline study involving renewable energy and institutional resource assessment and submitted a report "Renewable Energy Research and Development: Obudu Ranch Plateau case study". Visit: www.onesky.ca/energetics/, to read two reports produced by him.
Recently, he led Nigerian academics to join world renown scholars (such as Dr. Herman Scheer among others, who are promoting sustainable energy implementation world-wide) to contribute a chapter entitled “Sustainable energy technologies for an emerging African megacity (Lagos, Nigeria)” to the book: Urban Energy Transition edited by Professor Peter Droege and published by Elsevier in March 2008. Previously, his seminal report on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency- Research and Development in Nigeria, informed discussions during the Energetic Solutions-international conference for realising renewable energy in developing nations and has been assisting postgraduate researchers as well as practitioners in renewable energy and energy efficiency. It also assisted the conference to formulate the Calabar Political Declaration- a strategy for developing a special policy for promoting the implementation of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in developing nations using Nigeria as a case study. He was instrumental to the founding of the Council for Renewable Energy in Nigeria (CREN) in 2004 and has been involved in sustainable energy project development, capacity building in sustainable energy and cognate work.
He has worked as a Consultant for international organizations such as the British ODA (DfID) in remote sensing and cartography, and in remote sensing image processing for geo-information systems design for ARD Inc., a USAID-funded US company that managed the Sustainable Practices in Agriculture for Critical Environments (SPACE) project in Cross River State, Nigeria. From 1989-1994, he worked as a Cartographer/Comptroller/Deputy Registrar in the Population Commission. Previously, he taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses in sustainable development management (environmental resource management, geospatial information sciences: aerospace remote sensing/image processing, GIS, cartography; geography and regional planning, physical oceanography among others) in the University of calabar, Imo State University- Calabar outreach programme and Ondo State university, Ado-Ekiti.
He received thorough multi-disciplinary, globally competitive postgraduate education in sustainable energy and development from reputable institutions including: artefact-the international sustainable energy/development institute in Gluecksburg-in northern Germany, near the Baltic Sea; University of Dortmund (Germany) -where he achieved a "very good" post-graduation in regional development management specializing in remote sensing image processing applications to spatial planning including energy infrastructural management. He also undertook a 14-month postgraduate fellowship involving research in remote sensing image processing applications to sustainable environmental management at the Geo-Information science unit of the Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Surveys (RECTAS) at OA University, Ile-Ife. Previously, he earned a B.Sc. Cum Laude in Geography from the University of Port Harcourt. Mr. Ingwe completed all coursework for the MSc degree in Environmental Resource Planning and defended a thesis proposal entitled “Spatio-temporal patterns of financial managements by state governments in the South-South political region of Nigeria”.
His recent book entitled: Physical Resource inventory: Inferential and Remote sensing Approaches, CRADLE, March 2006 (with Asuquo Afangideh), aims to promote inventory and assessment of natural environmental resources (including renewable energy sources) as a means of facilitating cost-effective resource management. His writing and publication of numerous articles, papers, and dissertations related to sustainable energy and development reflects his deep concern about the energy crisis that the world faces and especially the over two billion poor people in developing nations who do not have access to clean and modern energy.
